
Settling on a Major in college is not an easy thing to do. You have to start thinking of it as soon as you have graduated from school. Some people find it easy to pick what their Major will be, but for some they are still in the process of deciding which course they might major in. Things you love to do. It is of most importance to consider what you love and like to do when choosing your college major. You will find it easier to stay focussed and involved in a course if you are truly interested and passionate about it. Things you’re good at. Are your peers always coming to you and asking your for help on a particular subject? If so, then you may consider choosing to Major in one of these subjects. Majoring in something that you are good at will help you to enjoy your course and subject matter. You may also find that majoring in something you are good could put you in a good position to achieve your best results and therefore be offered great opportunities upon graduation.
Things you want to do. Have you always had an interest in being a teacher, lawyer or a doctor? Avoid limiting yourself to only doing what is conventional for those areas. If you are interested in being a doctor but you’d also love to study a language, you can have both by completing your pre-med subjects, but majoring in the language of your choice. You will find that you will enjoy your time more at College if you are able to do something that interests you while also pursuing a long term profession.
Things that you want to learn. As with picking something that you love to do, it is also a good idea to pick something that you WANT to learn about. If you’re interested in acting picking a major that will allow you to learn acting techniques is important and you will find it fun. However if you are interested in running your own theater company some day, you really have to know all about the business. Such as ethics, rules, marketing, customer service and public relations. So selecting a major that challenges you intellectually and also gives your the practical training you will need in the future is very important and can improve your chances of success.
Life factors you need to consider. Many students may have other pressures that influence their decision on choosing a major such as family expectations, financial commitments and cultural expectations. So it’s not only internal factors that influence your decision. You also need to think of the external aspects that will affect your post-college life in one way or another. Ruling out a major should be a balance for your dreams and desires, try not to get too overwhelmed with it all.
Have fun and take your time choosing your major in College. Remember that on average people change their career path six times in their working life, so if you make the wrong decision, it doesn’t mean disaster, you will probably end up changing your mind later in life anyway.
